Databases are a core component of the technology infrastructure. Substantial changes, such as migrations or upgrades, provide significant opportunities, but may also introduce considerable risk. To help customers capitalize on the new version of ASE, Sybase offers the ASE 15 Migration Strategy Service — a short-term consulting package that provides a structured methodology to itemize the opportunities and potential challenges resulting from the migration — both within the database server and the wider ecosystem components that may be impacted.
The service is delivered in a workshop format — moderated by an experienced consuthisltant specializing in Sybase architectures. Sybase consultants possess comprehensive domain experience and have access to a wide knowledge base with vast experience conducting ASE migrations — allowing them to arrive at a qualified assessment of the tasks at hand. The findings are presented in a migration strategy document, including a high-level implementation plan, outlining details on the migration tasks and providing the basis for a comprehensive risk mitigation and opportunity maximization strategy. This service package also has an education bundle that you may choose to include.
Objectives
Beginning the migration effort with a detailed plan gives customers an opportunity to manage their project effectively — minimizing disruptions and those infamous migration surprises — while providing a method to forecast timelines and effectively schedule costly resources. With any major migration effort, there are risks that must be identified and weighed early in the planning process. Critical activities and dependencies must be reviewed and understood by the migration team stakeholders, as migration scripts are typically drawn from the overall detailed migration plan. To plan a positive outcome, contingencies should be developed well in advance of the migration itself.
This service requires considerable participation from the customer, both at the management and operational levels.
STRATEGY APPROACH
Before arriving onsite at your location, a Sybase ASE product consultant will ask you to complete a detailed technical questionnaire to capture the pertinent information about your ASE environment and to be well prepared for specific needs.
When first onsite, the Sybase ASE consultant will meet with the project sponsor and technical team to confirm the Critical Success Factors of the migration effort and explore the strategies to achieve them.
The Sybase ASE consultant will then review and document the Database Server and its ecosystem from the bottom-up using workshop style meetings with technical stakeholders. The components discussed and reviewed include:
- Hardware platform and Operating System
- I/O subsystem
- Databases and objects within them
- Integration technologies
- Operational procedures
- Applications and their characteristics
- Scripts and procedures that work with the current ASE environment
A Review Meeting with technical staff will be led by the Sybase consultant to discuss the migration strategy being recommended, present the implementation plan being prepared and obtain customer input on dependencies and potential backout strategies.
The Sybase ASE consultant will utilize the knowledge gained about your environment and from working with your staff to prepare a technical strategy document to upgrade your ASE server and a high-level implementation plan outlining tasks corresponding to the complete migration to ASE 15. This Migration Strategy document may contain such details as hardware, memory, storage, and application requirements, an analysis of the requirements, technical considerations to meet the ASE 15 product requirements, any other findings and recommendations, and a listing of high-level activities to be performed in order to effect a success upgrade to ASE 15.
Finally, the Sybase ASE consultant will complete the service with by meeting with the migration project sponsor to submit the migration strategy document. Typically, this meeting results in a substantial Question & Answer session.
